SUMMARY:Subdivision Strategies - Gh level 1
DESCRIPTION:“ Subdivision Strategies – Gh lvl. 1 ” is a 3-day (24-hour) Grasshopper marathon workshop\, dealing with the implementation of basic subdivision and folding strategies in architectural design. In this workshop\, we are aiming towards the design\, analysis and full scale fabrication of a modular\, folding architectural installation\, to be permanently exhibited at Decode Fab Lab. During the course of this class\, you’ll learn and comprehend the fundamentals of visual programming with Grasshopper3d\, and move quickly from simple data structure management to complex generative modelling\, concluding with a design case study\, to be fabricated after the completion of the workshop\, with our in-house cnc laser cutter.. \nThis 3 days event is designed for everyone who is interested in gaining basic computational design skills\, with a focus on design analysis and optimisation\, for the purposes of digital fabrication. During these days\, you will be introduced to process-oriented design\, you will gain access to a wide range of form-finding tools and techniques and you will learn ways of preparing your ideas for prototyping and fabrication. \nCourse Outline\nIn this training course (Subdivision Strategies – Gh lvl. 1) you will learn to create and edit grasshopper definitions and get acquainted with parametric modeling. This fast-moving class deals with most of Grasshopper’s core functionality\, ranging from curve editing and data-tree manipulations to logical gates and also gives you a first glimpse of Daniel Piker’s “Kangaroo” Grasshopper plug-in\, for physics simultation and optimization purposes. \nThe duration of the course is 24 hours. The course is intensive and spans two consecutive days of design training (10:00 to 19:00\, with a 1 hour lunch-break at 15:00) and one day\, oriented towards the design of our target project. The fabrication and assembly of the project will take place on the following day\, by the decode staff and whomever of the students may want to join! \nStructure\nIn this class (Subdivision Strategies – Gh lvl. 1)\, you will systematically move through the user interface\, command access\, creation and editing of curves\, surfaces and solids\, through computational methods. Information will be presented at an accelerated pace. \n \nExpected Outcomes \nAfter this course students are expected to be able to: \n\nCreate parametric models\nUnderstand algorithmic design principles\nUtilise basic parametric tools\, such as attractors and morphing\nProduce custom grasshopper definitions\, according to their design intent\nPrepare 3d models for fabrication with 3d-printing and cnc cutting technologies\n\nCurriculum\nAt decode™ we believe effective training needs an intriguing goal instead of generic exercises. Most of the tutorials will be presented as part of a design process\, in which we will be doing structural analysis and redesigning well-acclaimed architectural projects\, as well as creating new objects from scratch. In this way each student will be guided through the process of completing a set of challenging and interesting design projects\, leading up to the final design goal. \nDuring the 24-hour course\, the following concepts will be covered: \n\nAcquaintance with the Grasshopper3d interface\nVarious ways of data input and output of Grasshopper\nOperators\n\n \n\nAnalysis of geometry and parameter extraction\nData trees and lists management\nBoolean operations and conditionals\n\n\n\nBasic functions for the dynamic generation and manipulation of geometry\nTransformations\, population and morphing\nPattern generation\nAttractors & Vector fields\nTriangulation algorithms\nQuad planarization\nUnrolling\, nesting and tagging for fabrication.\n\n \n \nPre-requisites\nRequires Windows skills and desire to create. Previous rhino3d modeling experience is deemed greatly helpful but not required. A general understanding of basic mathematical principles is also considered helpful\, but an explanatory lecture will be given where needed. \nAll participants are required to have: \n\nTheir personal laptop with them. Additional NUC computers can be provided after timely communication.\nRhinoceros3d V5.0 pre-installed. You can download a 90-days evaluation version from http://www.rhino3d.com/download\nGrasshopper 3d (latest version) pre-installed. You can download the plugin for free from http://www.grasshopper3d.com/page/download-1\nLots of patience and positive thinking\, learning is fun after all!

SUMMARY:Contour Bench – CNC Milling
DESCRIPTION:Contour Bench – CNC Milling\nLet’s FABRICATE Contour Bench – CNC Milling! \nJoin us as we design and 3d-mill our own\, full scale\, tri-axial contour bench! In this intensive fabrication workshop\, you will learn some fundamental grasshopper parametric modeling and drafting techniques\, in order to create laser cuttable geometry\, from anything that can be cut with a laser or CNC milling machine\, from carton to Perspex & Plywood and turn it into anything you may imagine\, be it a stool\, a building facade\, a lighting fixture or more. More importantly\, you will get to actually take part in the process of milling the necessary parts and intricate joints for the bench\, in our in-house CNC milling and assemble it in our fab lab! Learn the whole process step – by – step in a tight workflow\, from scratch to final object in just four 8-hour days! The final outcome is to be exhibited at the ESW (eso) Interior Design Conference\, at SGT\, on the 17/02.\n\nIn collaboration with Arhcisearch.gr and Designmag for the ΕΣΩ convention\, Athens 2016 \nCourse Outline \n“Let’s FABRICATE! Contour Bench” is an introductory Grasshopper3D & CNC-milling workshop designed for anyone interested in digital design and fabrication. Whether you are an absolute beginner or an experienced designer who wants to expand your skills and portfolio\, you are more than welcome to attend. Through a 4-day intensive course you are expected to gain intermediate parametric design & fabrication skills that will enable you to design an intricate model\, as well as organize it for fabrication. Ranging from basic nurb creation commands to some advanced parametric methods for contouring and drafting\, the course will conclude to the actual\, 1:1 scale fabricated wooden object (tri-axial contoured bench) which will be exhibited throughout ΕΣΩ.\nAll materials for the design are included in the workshop fee. Each student receives the official courseware for Rhino level 1 & grasshopper as part of attending this course\, as well as a 50% discount on a decodeTraining™ course of their choice. \n   \nSchedule \nThe workshop (Contour Bench – CNC Milling) spans two consecutive weekends\, on the 6-7/02 and the 13-14/02. The classes strart at 10.00 and last until 19.00\, with a 1-hour lunchbrake in the middle.\nThe first two days introduce you to parametric design with Grasshopper 3d and stand as an accelerated Grasshopper level 1 workshop\, where we focus on the design of the tri-axial bench\, as well as the creation of the cutting files. The last two days begin with an introduction to RhinoCam and rotate around the fabrication and assemly of the object. You will work on an intensive pace and several benchmarks will be placed\, in order to be able to deliver the final object on schedule for the exhibition. \n    \nPre-requisites \nRequires Windows skills and desire to create. Previous rhino3d modeling experience is deemed greatly helpful but not required. A general understanding of basic mathematical principles is also considered helpful\, but an explanatory lecture will be given where needed. \nAll participants are required to have:\n*Their personal laptop with them. Additional NUC computers can be provided after timely communication.\n*Rhinoceros3d V5.0 pre-installed. You can download a 90-days evaluation version from http://www.rhino3d.com/download\n*Grasshopper 3d (latest version) pre-installed. You can download the plugin for free from http://www.grasshopper3d.com/page/download-1\n*Lots of patience and positive thinking\, learning is fun after all\, crafting even more so! \n   \n
